“Dear Jacket’s lawyer, social worker, case worker, ACS lawyer, etc. etc,
As the title says, I just saw that Jacket’s pediatrician wrote “adopted” in big letters across the history portion of her medical form (that I turned into the nurse last night). It gave me a heart-attack. The pediatrician knows that Jacket is in foster care and the plan is return to parent (or aunt?).
If...

become a NYC foster parent.
So what if I caved and let Jacket eat a bowl of cereal in the bathtub this morning?
With a salad fork
And some leftover pizza
Drizzled with ‘sup sup’ (ketchup)
Singing that she’s not going to rehab (Amy winehouse)
Pretending that she’s shaving her legs with a glue stick
While wearing socks
And of course her Jacket

Sorry to be so negative folks...
I’ve been a bit absent because I’m going through tons of drama with the visitation coach and I don’t want to be perceived as a person who can’t get along with anyone…
But that hasn’t stopped me from blogging so far, so here goes. Since the visitation coach has been working with Jacket’s mom, the tiny bit of ‘family to family’ communication...
This morning Jacket did her usual call from the crib of “Good morning, I want out, I want Mommy- Mooommmmmmy!!!!!”. So I dragged myself to her room pulled her out of bed and took her back to mine (once I moved her toddler bed away from the crib she can’t crawl out). After about 2 minutes of “I happy” she announced that she was hungry. As I’m dragging us to...

50% off?
If you go to the Gladney Center for Adoption website and click “Which Program is Right for You?” my perception is that babies who are black or half-black, are…well, priced half-off.
Is anyone else creeped out by the “ABC” program verses “Agency Assisted”? Should kids of any color all cost the same or should the rate be based on supply and demand? I...

Was there a tornado in Brooklyn?
The trees broke, windows buckled and the rain was going in every direction. I grabbed Jacket and instinctually went into the bathroom and then just like that it was over.
Update: Just got a call from the case worker asking “What the hell happened? I just walked outside and there are trees on all of the cars!” (calling me assuming because i live 1 block away)

such a strange new morning
For the past 9 months I’ve been woken-up by some sort of desperate sound coming from Jacket’s crib. Usually a scream or a faux-friendly “Good Morning!!!” which really meant get-your-lazy-ass-up-can’t-you-see-the-sun-is-going-to-rise-in-another-two-hours.
Today I awoke to a cactus, yes- an actually cactus being shoved painfully up my nose while Jacket considerately...

Jacket was taking a nap in her crib this afternoon (she’s only agreed to go into her ‘big girl bed’ twice) and I was in my room comatose with the door closed. Out of the corner of my eye I see the door knob slowly turning and I freaked out. No one should be in the house. Out popped the most adorable little head with the fear of god in her eyes. “How the hell did you get...

My cell phone just came up “SNAP’S MOM” and I leapt across the room. Unfortunately, it turns out to be Jesus’ old cell phone number which belongs to someone else now- so they had the wrong number. Sigh.
Blame war in death of Bedstuy toddler →
This is a follow-up to my earlier post about a mother who has now been indicted on charges of abusing her medically fragile daughter who died last week. If you scroll down you can see that I posted in the comments section which is something I’ve never done before.
Oversimplifying, but...
It’s still incredibly strange to me how so much energy and resources are spent to document and prove why a child should be removed from an unsafe home, and then the moment they are placed in foster care all efforts shift toward gathering evidence to demonstrate that a return home is safe.

Not intending to be ominous by not posting. No big changes, just gathering my thoughts and keeping myself busy by playing with Jacket!
Yesterday I would have said that my chances of being able to adopt Jacket were at 50%. Today I think it’s less than 10%.
I think there’s a spare pair of Dora the Explorer underwear in every tote bag I own.

Me: Jacket, show Elia (babysitter) where you slept last night!
Jacket: (points directly to the closet)
Uhm, no. You didn't sleep in the closet. Thank god this is your babysitter and not a case worker. Let's try again. Where did you sleep last night?
Babble babble bed.
That's right, your big girl bed!

She even slept through the flash of a photo
It’s Jacket’s first night out of the crib and into her new toddler bed and no one told me that I would be the one losing sleep. Jacket hasn’t gotten up once but I’m worried that if I fall asleep she’ll wake-up at 2am, go out the front door, down the street and wind up at the deli with fists-full of M&M’s and a crowd standing over her asking...
