“When?”

Jacket’s hit another milestone in expressive language as evident by her constant questions about ‘when’.  Answering ‘when’ is funny though, because concepts like “Thursday”, “in 2 hours” or even “after it gets warm outside” are incredibly abstract.

It’s really helpful that I have a job working with adults who have developmental disabilities, many who never mastered the abstract idea of time.  I’ve learned to use a lot of visuals cues in addition to saying more concrete things like “after lunch” or “before bedtime”.  And of course to repeat, repeat, repeat.  It’s all about routine and predictability which translate into exactly what kids crave as well.

Yesterday Jacket was trying her hand at some of the more advanced measurements of time including the days of the week, minutes and months.  “On FWIDAY we’re going to Fworida”.  Actually, Jacket, if you must know, we’re going on a Wednesday.  “Well, you’ll have to wait five-five-seven minutes for that”.  This kind of conversation went on all day long.  I wish I had an exact transcript.  It would be SNL sketch worthy.
