“Accidents happen”

I like to think about the small, measurable differences I’ve been able to make in Jacket’s life sometimes.  One of these is to not panic over spilled milk.  Seeing Jacket jump and cower into a hundred “Sorry, sorry, sorry“s when she dropped or spilled something post-reunification was hard.

The days she spends at my place I make a point of conveying a very positive “It’s Okay, accidents happen!” and then we clean it up together.  I model this constantly around Jacket’s family and I love to see Jacket switch up from flinching when she accidently knocks something over to declaring to her “It’s okay mom, accidents happen.  I’ll go clean it up.”
